The eighth grade teachers prepare students for a fun day of learning in an incredibly beautiful outdoor classroom. Students prepare for the day by learning the problem solving skills necessary for orienteering. The day has four main components designed to engage the students in active learning: orienteering, math estimation, geology of Boulder Field and this year the students did water quality testing for the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Each activity is specially designed to peak the student's interest. Orienteering is what is known as a culminating activity designed to allow students to test the problem solving and map reading skills they learned in school on a real orienteering course. At Boulder Field the students collect data by counting the boulders in a one square meter area. They take three samples, take the average and then given the area of Boulder Field, they estimate the number of boulders in Boulder Field. This is the engaging activity leading into the probability and statistics lessons within Math class. The park naturalist explained the theory of formation of Boulder Field and took the students on an exploration of Boulder Field. The final activity, water quality testing, allowed the students to see first hand the effects of acid rain on our area's streams.
I am still waiting for students to e-mail me pictures of this year's trip, so I can post them, instead of last year's trip pictures as shown below.
