The Federal Trade Commission wants students to be on the lookout for these warning signs of scams:

  • application fees or requests for credit card or bank account numbers
  • guaranteed winnings
  • unusual requests for personal information
  • unsolicited opportunities; "You have been selected..."
  • large fees for scholarship search programs (most databases can be accessed free through the Internet, your local library or media center)
